Project Director, Dr. Jason A. Higgins is a postdoctoral fellow in digital humanities at Virginia Tech, jointly affiliated with the Center for Humanities, VT Publishing, and the History Department. He earned a Ph.D. in History and a graduate certificate in Public History from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2021, where he specialized in the Vietnam War and veterans' history. Over the past ten years, he has recorded over 100 interviews with veterans. He is also the director of the Descendant Communities Reconciliation Project, in collaboration with Dr. Kerry Moselely-Hobbs, the executive director of the More Than a Fraction Foundation. This project records oral histories with descendants of enslaved and enslaving families to promote truth and the possibilities of reconciliation. He is the co-editor of Service Denied: Marginalized Veterans in Modern American History (UMass Press 2022). His forthcoming book, Prisoners After War: Veterans in the Age of Mass Incarceration will be published by the University of Massachusetts Press in the Veterans series in January, 2024. 

Research Assistant, Madison Cholewa is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech where she earned her B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Sociology. Along with her work on Crossing the Military-Civilian Divide Oral History project, she is also a research assistant for the Descendant Communities Reconciliation project, which records oral histories with descendants of enslaved and enslaving families to promote truth and the possibilities of reconciliation. Madison is currently pursuing a career that will further explore her passions of law and justice, particularly how they intersect.  

Research Assistant, Leena Alsayab is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech where she earned her B.A in political science and minors in War and Society and Middle East Studies. Leena is currently pursuing law school where she hopes to become an international human rights lawyer. Along with her work with Crossing the Military-Civilian Divide Oral History project, Leena is also a research assistant for the Descendant Communities Reconciliation project, which records oral histories with descendants of enslaved and enslaving families to promote truth and the possibilities of reconciliation. 

Research Assistant, Gabrielle Wells

Research Assistant, Gabrielle Wells is a senior at Virginia Tech where she is majoring in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience and has a minor in War and Society. Following graduation, Gabrielle hopes to pursue a civilian career with the Department of Defense.
