Talking about Trauma and the Process of Healing

Higgins: Beyond the court, what was the first time that you actually openly talked about that experience?
Dane: Probably like having to do my VA disability claim . . It was the first time I had shared that.
Higgins: Do you feel comfortable talking about it today?
Dane: Yeah. I do. I think it is part of the process of healing. And I also think that I have talked about it so many times – I think that it is just easy for me to share because I have talked about it so much. And I know that many people – because especially during “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” that things – similar situations to me – I know they happen to others, and I have to think of it that they may not have shared, but I need to because the story is not just me, it impacted lots of people.
