Steve Sober
In his interview, Steve Sober talked about growing up in various places abroad as the son of a U.S. foreign service officer, including Madagascar, India, Iceland, Czechoslovakia, and briefly in the United States. He talked about his experiences in each of the places he called home, and how they influenced his perspective on the United States and its role in the world. He talks about going to college for a little bit before he volunteered to enlist in the U.S. Army when faced with the challenge of being drafted. He spoke of his basic training and being assigned to work in New York for a little before he got orders to serve in Vietnam. He talked of his travel there and the atmosphere of the base. He explained his work as a company clerk in the finance unit as well as being a truck driver for the compound, his experiences with civilians, good and bad NCOs, taking R&R trips, and life on the Phu Hiep base.
After coming home, he talked about his experience joining the VVAW and his involvement in demonstrations and protests such as Operation Raw and the difficulties he faced with differing perspectives from not only Americans but also his own family, especially his father. He talked about what patriotism and American democracy means to him, and how this country now is not the one he, nor other veterans, fought to protect. He finished the interview with how he got to be involved with his past and the VVAW today, through the power of social media connections, and how he wants his experiences and life to be remembered as one that was dedicated to American values.
