A Call for Inclusion
I thought about everything else. I thought about what does this mean whenever a family has to go through a second-parent adoption when they have a kid and they may not even get to that process because it is so costly and it takes so long. It’s sometimes so intrusive, what does it mean whenever I am sitting in the hospital and my partner can not come and make those decisions that I have to have this stupid piece of paper that says, “you are the power of attorney,” or any other taxes on my life that even come just from being gay or anything else like any other under-served population. I have thought about not just the act of marriage, but I thought about everything else that came after that. Like the implications of everything that I have to do extra to literally just exist. Even today, like this morning, I was filling out this paper for my son to go to this art camp and it was a school form, and it said, "Mother slash guardian or father slash guardian.
... I did email the school and say “can you please update it to be more inclusive of everyone,” because most people in my town usually have a grandmother or grandfather taking care of them as well. But I mean it is just those things that continue.”
